 SmokersHypnosis.com -   What is a trance?

  A trance is simply an altered state - a state when you are aware of something other than your immediate surroundings. When you daydream, you are in a trance. When you watch a scary TV show, and your heart rate goes up, or you jump at a particularly scary part, you are in a trance because nothing is actually happening to you. However, you would snap out of that trance immediately if the phone rang. Similarly, when you do things unconsciously, without thinking, you are in a trance.

  Can everyone achieve a trance state?

  It is my experience that most people are in a trance state most of the time. In the thousands of people that I've worked with, the only ones unable to achieve a trance were people who could not relax to the point that they refused to close their eyes; and my 8 year old grandson who couldn't stop laughing and kept asking if he was hypnotized yet.

  The only level of trance that is necessary is a light trance which is similar to daydreaming or doing things repetitiously, unconsciously. Most people are in a trance like this much of the time. This level of trance is just fine for hypnosis.

  Other people find that they go into a deeper trance - where they are momentarily unaware of their surroundings. And that's fine.

  Other people may feel as if they are falling asleep. And that's fine.

  Will hypnosis force me to quit, even if I don't want to?

  No. In order for hypnosis to be effective, you have to provide the conscious motivation. For most people, that means you want to quit smoking at least 51% of the time.
